Captopril
CAUTION:
Do not take captopril if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. If
you become pregnant while taking captopril, call your doctor without
delay.
General Information and Indications:
Captopril is used to treat high blood
pressure and heart failure. It decreases certain chemicals that tighten the
blood vessels, so blood flows more smoothly and the heart can pump blood
more efficiently.
Information For Users:
Captopril comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It
is usually taken two or three times a day on an empty stomach, 1 hour before
or 2 hours after a meal. Follow the directions on your prescription label,
ask your doctor or pharmacist If you have any questions. Take captopril
exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often
than prescribed by your health care provider.
Captopril controls high blood pressure and heart failure but does not cure
them.
Continue taking captopril even if you feel well. Do not discontinue taking
captopril without informing your doctor.
Special
precautions:
o Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have
allergy to captopril or any other medications.
o Inform your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription
medications you are taking, especially diuretics ('water pills'), lithium (Eskalith,
Lithobid), other medications for high blood pressure, potassium supplements,
and vitamins.
o inform your doctor if you are breast-feeding heart or kidney disease or
diabetes.
o if you are having surgery, including dental surgery, Inform your doctor or
dentist that you are taking captopril.
Possible Adverse
Effects:
Though adverse effects of captopril are not
common, they could occur. Inform your doctor if any of the following
symptoms are severe or do not go away:
o lightheadedness or dizziness
o salty or metallic taste, or decreased ability to taste
o cough
o sore throat
o fever
o mouth sores
o unusual bruising
o fast heartbeat
o extreme tiredness (fatigue)
If you have any of the following symptoms, call your doctor without delay:
o chest pain
o swelling of the face, eyes, lips, tongue, arms, or legs
o difficulty swallowing or breathing
o fainting
o rash
