Cefdinir

General Information and Indications:

Cefdinir is an antibiotic used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria, such as pneumonia, bronchitis, ear infections, sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and skin infections. Antibiotics will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections.

Information For Users:

Cefdinir comes as a capsule and as an oral suspension. It is usually taken once or twice a day. Shake the suspension well before each use to mix the medication evenly. Follow the directions on your prescription label, ask your doctor or pharmacist If you have any questions. Take cefdinir exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your health care provider.

Special precautions:

o Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have allergy to cefdinir or any other cephalosporin antibiotic such as cefaclor (Ceclor) or cephalexin (Keflex), penicillin, or any other medications.
o Inform your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially probenecid (Benemid, Probalan) and vitamins.
o be aware that antacids containing magnesium or aluminum and products containing iron interfere with cefdinir, making it less effective. Take cefdinir 2 hours before or 2 hours after antacids or iron products.
o inform your doctor if you are breast-feeding colitis, diabetes, or kidney disease.
o Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking cefdinir, call your doctor.

Cefdinir may cause an upset stomach. Take cefdinir with food or milk.

If you are diabetic, use Clinistix or TesTape (but not Clinitest) to test your urine for sugar while taking this drug; cefdinir may cause false positive results.
