General Information and Indications:
Codeine is used, usually in combination with
other medications, to reduce coughing. It also is used to relieve mild to
moderate pain.
Information For Users:
Codeine comes alone or in combination with other drugs as
a tablet, capsule, and liquid to take by mouth. It usually is taken every
4-6 hours as needed. Follow the directions on your prescription label
carefully, and ask Your physician or pharmacist to explain any part you do
not understand. Take codeine exactly as directed.
Codeine can be habit-forming. Do not take a larger dose, take it more often,
or for a longer period than Your Health provider tells you to.
special precautions:
Call your physician or pharmacist if you are allergic to
codeine or any other drugs.
Call your physician or pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription
medications you are taking, especially other pain relievers;
antidepressants; medications for cough, cold, or allergies; sedatives;
sleeping pills; tranquilizers; and vitamins.
Call your physician if you have or have ever had liver, kidney, or lung
disease.
Call your physician if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are
breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking codeine, Call your
physician.
if you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the physician or
dentist that you are taking codeine.
you should know that this drug may make you drowsy. Do not drive a car or
operate machinery until you know how this drug affects you.
remember that alcohol can add to the drowsiness caused by this drug.
Possible Adverse
Effects:
Although adverse effects from codeine are not common,
they can occur. Call your physician if any of the following symptoms are
severe or long lasting:
dizziness
lightheadedness
drowsiness
upset stomach
vomiting
constipation
stomach pain
rash
difficulty urinating
If you experience either of the following symptoms, Call your physician
immediately:
difficulty breathing
mood changes
