Propoxyphene
CAUTION:
Propoxyphene in high doses, taken by itself or in combination with other
drugs, has been associated with drug-related deaths. Do not take
propoxyphene in combination with other drugs that cause drowsiness:
alcohol, tranquilizers, sleep aids, antidepressant drugs, or
antihistamines. Do not take a larger dose, take it more often, or for a
longer period than your doctor tells you to.
General Information and Indications:
Propoxyphene is used to relieve mild to
moderate pain.
Information For Users:
Propoxyphene comes as a tablet, capsule, and
liquid to take by mouth. It is usually taken every 4 hours as needed. Follow
the directions on your prescription label, ask your doctor or pharmacist If
you have any questions. Take propoxyphene exactly as directed.
Propoxyphene can be habit-forming.
special precautions:
o Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have
allergy to propoxyphene or any other medications.
o Inform your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription
medications you are taking, especially other pain relievers; anticoagulants
('blood-thinners') such as warfarin (Coumadin); antidepressants;
antihistamines; medications for cough, cold, or allergies; muscle relaxants;
sedatives; seizure medications; sleeping pills; tranquilizers; and vitamins.
o inform your doctor if you are breast-feeding liver or kidney disease, or a
history of alcoholism.
o Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are
breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking propoxyphene, call your
doctor.
o if you are having surgery, including dental surgery, Inform your doctor or
dentist that you are taking propoxyphene.
o you should know that this drug may make you drowsy. Do not drive a car or
operate machinery until you know how this drug affects you.
o remember that alcohol can add to the drowsiness caused by this drug.
Possible Adverse
Effects:
Though adverse effects of propoxyphene are not common, they could occur.
Inform your doctor if any of the following symptoms are severe or do not go
away:
o dizziness
o lightheadedness
o drowsiness
o upset stomach
o vomiting
o constipation
o stomach pain
o skin rash
o mood changes
o headache
If you have the following symptom, call your doctor without delay:
o difficulty breathing
